The third edition of the Stati Generali sul Diabete, promoted by the Federation of Italian Diabetology Societies, brought together institutions, scientific societies, and patient associations to develop a national strategy for 2026–2028 for a condition affecting approximately 4 million people in Italy. Among the key topics that emerged was, for the first time, an “ecosystem” approach to clinical data management.

Incomplete, non-standardized data, or data isolated within a single medical record, limits the quality of clinical decision-making. Structured, traceable data shared between hospitals and community healthcare services, on the other hand, becomes a practical tool for clinical governance.

This is where our contribution and research come into play.

MetaClinic®, used in over 90% of Italian diabetes centers, is the platform through which the data underlying the AMD Annals—the benchmark survey for diabetes care in Italy—are collected and validated.

Integrated with hospital and community healthcare information systems, the Electronic Health Record, and Regional Telemedicine Infrastructures, MetaClinic® enables multicenter diabetes management across local health authorities, hospitals, and regional healthcare organizations, supported by a robust and secure database.

Clinical data governance in diabetes, therefore, is not simply a goal for the future. It is already an operational model: an infrastructure used every day in nearly all diabetes centers across the country, capable of connecting data, healthcare professionals, and care pathways.

It is from this real-world experience that we continue to build the digital healthcare of tomorrow.
